Amphibious habitats

As part of our Science topic on what animals need to survive, we went outside to collect things needed for amphibians to survive. We collected, leaves, sticks and stones to provide shelter and attract food, and filled containers with water. We will be checking these for signs of life for the remainder of this term.

Map making

Following on from our heritage walk in the first week of term, in Geography we have been making floor maps. Then we used these and looked at existing maps of Albrighton to create our own sketch maps.

Making bird feeders

In Science this half-term we have been learning about what animals need to survive. We have learned about mammals, fish and birds. On Wednesday, some of our Year 1 and 2 children made bird feeders and we will be checking these over the next few weeks.

Heritage Walk

This morning all Key Stage 1 children went for a walk around our village as part of our Geography work this half term. The children were spotting important landmarks in the village and took photos ready for us to create maps next week.

Spellings

Year 1’s will be given 5 new spellings to learn each Friday and all spellings will link to the phonics teaching from that week. Children will then be tested on these the following Friday and will be given a sixth word that they haven’t seen.

Year 2’s will be given 8 new spellings each Friday and all spellings will link to the phonics teaching from that week. Children will then be tested on these the following Friday and will be given 2 extra words that they haven’t seen.

Support for Reading

Below, you will find some guidance for parents of Y1 and Y2 children in order to support your child at home. As you will recognise, we create lots of opportunities for reading within our school day. However, it is essential that children read regularly at home in order for them to make good progress and feel successful as a reader. Children who can read, enjoy reading and become even more confident and enthusiastic, having even greater success! Reading school books more than once is of benefit to develop accuracy and fluency.

To support your child’s progress in Reading, we would ask

  • That you hear your child read regularly at home (on most days)
  • Parents ask questions about what has been read to check understanding
